Spey Bay

Moray Dolphins at Spey Bay

The Moray Dolphins can sometimes be seen at Spey Bay near Fochabers. The River Spey meets the Moray Firth and it is a feeding place for dolphins helped by the supply of salmon from the Spey.

At Spey Bay you will find the Scottish Dolphin Centre, previously known as the WDC Wildlife Centre.

This visitor centre has free admission and it is a great place to learn about the Moray Firth Dolphins. With sound recordings, video and information boards as well as books, souvenirs and importantly a notice board for the latest dolphin sightings. Binoculars can also be hired. There is also a small oak beamed café for a refreshing cup of coffee.

There is plenty of space along the shore to watch for dolphins. The beach is made up of pebbles so can be hard on the feet, however, another favourite dolphin spotting place is on the raised grassy bank in front of the old ice houses. If there are no dolphins around there is a wonderful collection of natural driftwood “sculptures” to admire on the beach.

This area is well known for its wildlife including ospreys, which are also regularly spotted. It also marks the former starting point for the Spey Way (now starting from Buckie). It’s a short walk from Spey Bay to Fochabers along the Spey.

Spey Bay is a small village with some holiday rentals nearby. Nearby Fochabers is another option as is Elgin which is the town in Moray Speyside.
