Culloden Moor

Culloden Moor

One of the most visited places in the Inverness area is Culloden battlefield. It was the scene of a harrowing battle fought on the 16th of April 1746. Contrary to popular belief the battle was not between England and Scotland but between the Jacobites and the Hanoverians. The Jacobites were led by the infamous Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie. The main aim of the Jacobites was to reinstate the Stuart line to the British throne.

Culloden battlefield is a sombre, moody place, especially in the early morning before the crowds arrive. Flags mark out the battle lines and you can walk round and try to imagine the battle unfolding with the help of strategically placed noticeboards. Memorial stones to the Scottish clans are scattered throughout the battlefield. Access to the battlefield is free and it is open all year round.

Culloden Visitor Centre

A new state of the art visitor centre was opened at Culloden battlefield in 2007 and is run by the National trust. It is set in the landscape to be as unobtrusive as possible. You can walk up onto the roof to view the battlefield. The exhibition itself gives a detailed account of the prelude to the battle, the battle itself and the aftermath. The entrance fee includes an audio-visual handset guide, which you can use to inform your walk around the battlefield.

There is a large car park and the visitor centre has toilets and café facilities. It can be reached by bus from Flacon Square, Inverness. Approximately 30 minutes
